WESTPORT RFC U16 LADIES CONNACHT LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Westport U16 won the division 1 Connacht league on Sunday 22nd December against Ballinasloe 24-7 in Corinthians RFC.
Both teams - who have met for the past two years in Connacht finals - were well matched. Westport went into the final in a strong position from the top of the table having won 6 out of 7 of their matches.
Westport’s first try was scored by Holly Burke in her first try of the season. Holly had two great carries before this so the try was hard won. And converted by Ruth Conway. Both sides were even at 7-7 at half time.
The Bulls rallied in the second half with a strong team performance all round. Special mention to Ellie Mai Keane who had some excellent carries. Strong pressure from Westport took its toll in the second half and despite receiving a team yellow card, Westport held Ballinasloe scoreless in the second half.
Westport’s second try was scored within 10 minutes by Tara Macken and again converted by Ruth Conway.
Twenty minutes later, their lead was bolstered when in a break away run, Kitty Fin Sweeney set up Clodagh McKenna for the third try. There were multiple stoppages for injury time with kick off at 1pm and the final whistle blown at 2:39pm but not before Leah McNamara scored the fourth and final try to seal the deal.
Corinthians RFC hosted the league final on their main pitch due to Dexcom Park being under construction. It was a windy but bright day. Supporters were in high spirits with Westport flags waving and cowbells ringing for the U16 Bulls.
Player of the match was Holly Burke.
